The internet is
full of the cool things
newborns are able to do
right after birth. As a new
dad you will find amazed at
what your newborn will learn
to do for the first couple
weeks. Don't jump the gun
though as often times
parents will expect too much
too soon from their newborn.
Here is a list of
common things that a newborn
won't be able to do right
away and when to expect
them:
- Smile
intentionally.
With newborns, burps
often look like smiles.
It can take 5 weeks
before your baby will
smile purposely.
- See objects
far away. Your
baby's eye sight will
improve with age and can
take months until she
can focus on objects
across the room.
- Lift head
up. That big
round head can be a
challenge to hold up for
a newborn. It takes a
few weeks to build up
the neck muscles
required to support the
head.
- Sit up
unassisted. If
you try to sit your baby
who is only a few months
old they will just fall
over like a sack of
potatoes. Babies need to
build up the stomach
muscles need to sit
upright and balance.
This can take up to 6
months.
- Eat solids.
Most babies until the
age of about 4 to 5
months will still have
the tongue thrust reflex
meaning any solids you
put in the mouth have a
great chance of being
spit out than swallowed.
- Drool.
Babies don't
produce enough saliva to
drool until the 3 month
mark. After that make
sure to have a blanket
handy at all times.
- Have teeth.
Your newborn
will probably begin to
cut teeth at about the
5th month mark.
- Grab and
hold objects.
At about 3 months of age
your baby will have the
motor skills to be able
to reach and grab for
small objects.
- Change their
own diapers.
This is just a dream for
this dad. Wouldn't it be
amazing if babies could
change their own diaper?
